The aims of a sedation and analgesic regimen in ICU are:

1. To provide as pleasant an experience for the patient as possible through ameliorating anxiety, agitation and minimising patient discomfort.

2. To ensure patient safety.

3. To facilitate patient participation in their care.

4. To reduce oxygen consumption when required.

5. To provide anaesthesia during potentially traumatic experiences, e.g. neuromuscular blockade.

6. To improve outcome through all of the above.
