SICS Trainees ReportHome |
GITS MeetingGlasgow 2005 On the 10th February the group of intensivitists in training in Scotland (GITS) met in Glasgow Royal Infirmary for an annual update. This meeting for advanced trainees throughout Scotland was organised by Mike Buttigieg. The morning was devoted to presentations of ongoing research by the trainees. This covered a broad range of topics including Dr Jim Ruddies work on the prevalence of HSV in the BALS of critically ill patients, and Dr Ewan Jacks appraisal of his work on glucose control. The early afternoon was taken up by the organisation and delegation of the team roles for the upcoming SICS multidisciplinary educational meeting under the leadership of Dr Michael Macmillan. This meeting takes place on the 25th and 26th of August. Following last year’s success, early application for this meeting is highly recommended, as space is limited. Details and application form are available on this link. January’s meeting followed its traditional format. After the trainee’s had discussed their own recent work and ongoing team projects, a consultant body was invited to stimulate further discussion. Lindsay Donaldson successfully covered the difficult Stewarts approach to acid-base practice and Magnus Garrioch covered sepsis management via interactive case orientated discussion sessions. Kevin Rooney provided an up to date lecture on HFOV. The meeting provided an opportunity for interaction between the intensive care trainees in Scotland, allowing communication about general training issues, regional variations in clinical practice and the current job situation. It is traditionally followed by a meal allowing a more informal chance to exchange news and it is hoped friendships made may form an early basis for good professional relationships through long-term careers across Scotland. It was particularly well attended by trainees from Aberdeen and Glasgow. Hopefully the momentum of the group will be continued both by the educational meeting in August and by a further GITS gathering towards the end of the year at a venue yet to be decided. All stages of trainees with an interest in ICM are welcome to be involved with GITS work. Contact details can be forwarded to Mhmacmillan@aol.com. Our thanks go to the sponsors and all the speakers.
