Monitoring in ICU

Cardiac output monitoring

There are many monitors available for the measurement of cardiac output together with other indicators of circulatory status The more commonly used ones are listed in the panel on the left.

Each has their advantages and disadvantages. It must be remembered that numbers produced by these monitors should be interpreted with care. If the numbers are out of keeping with the clinical picture then ensure simple input values such as patient height and weight are correct, and that the operator understands the monitor and how it derives it’s results.
