Contact the regional liver unit early — do not wait until the patient meets KCC

•  Any patient with ALF and Grade II or above encephalopathy should be discussed with a liver unit

•  INR rising above 3 in the context of jaundice and encephalopathy warrants urgent discussion     

•  Most specialist liver units in Scotland refer to the Scottish Liver Transplant Unit at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh
