Advanced respiratory support
The different methods of advanced respiratory support include:
- Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
- Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
- Invasive ventilation
Contraindications to CPAP and NIV include:
- Depressed conscious level
- Unprotected airway
- Vomiting
- Facial trauma
- High gastric anastomoses
- Poor compliance with therapy
In this section, the module covers indications for ventilation—specifically CPAP and NIV. Details of invasive ventilation are addressed in Section 3.
