Advanced respiratory support

The different methods of advanced respiratory support include:

  • Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
  • Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)
  • Invasive ventilation

Contraindications to CPAP and NIV include:

  • Depressed conscious level
  • Unprotected airway
  • Vomiting
  • Facial trauma
  • High gastric anastomoses
  • Poor compliance with therapy

In this section, the module covers indications for ventilation—specifically CPAP and NIV. Details of invasive ventilation are addressed in Section 3.
