NIV

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) refers to ventilatory support delivered via the patient’s upper airway using a mask or similar device. The patient initiates breaths, which are supported by CPAP plus an inspiratory support pressure. It is especially useful in patients with type 2 respiratory failure (both hypoxic and hypercapnic).
