Management of sepsis
The surviving sepsis guidelines consist of 7 steps completed in two stages. The first 4 should be completed within the first three hours of the patient presenting with sepsis. There are a further 3 steps which should then be completed at some point within the first six hours. Click and drag the numbers and place them in the right order
Stage one steps – the first three hours
- Administer broad spectrum antibiotics.
- Measure the lactate level.
- Administer 30mL/Kg crystalloid for hypotension or lactate >/= 4mmol/L.
- Obtain blood cultures prior to the administration of antibiotics.
- Re-measure lactate if initial lactate was elevated.
- Apply vasopressors (for hypotension that does not respond to initial fluid resuscitation) to maintain a MAP>/= 65mmHg.
- In the event of persistent arterial hypotension despite volume resuscitation or initial lactate >/= 4mmol/L: Measure central venous pressure (CVP) measure central venous oxygen saturation.
Stage two steps – the first six hours
